Egypt is sunny almost every day of the year, but temperatures, crowds, and prices change a lot by season. Here is how to choose the right time for your trip.
October to April: peak season
This is the most popular time to visit. Days are warm and pleasant, nights can be cool, especially in December and January, and conditions are ideal for exploring the Pyramids and the temples of Luxor and Aswan. It is also the busiest and most expensive season, so book hotels and Nile cruises early. Christmas, New Year, and Easter fill up fastest.
May and September: shoulder season
Temperatures climb, but early mornings and evenings are comfortable, and prices are often lower. Plan sightseeing for the cooler hours and rest in the middle of the day.
June to August: summer
Summer is very hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan, where afternoons can be extremely hot. It is the best time for deals, and a good choice if you plan to spend part of your trip on the Red Sea coast. Summer travel works well for families tied to school vacations, as long as you start early each day.
Special dates to know
- Abu Simbel Sun Festival: around February 22 and October 22 each year, the rising sun lights up the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple.
- Ramadan: the dates move each year. Sites stay open, but hours can change, and evenings come alive after sunset.
- U.S. holidays: Thanksgiving, winter break, and spring break are popular with American families, so plan ahead.
Getting there from the U.S.
EgyptAir flies nonstop between New York (JFK) and Cairo. From other U.S. cities, travelers usually connect through Europe or the Gulf. Check current schedules when you book, as routes change.
Our recommendation
For a first trip, aim for October, November, February, March, or early April: great weather without the holiday rush. Tell us your dates, and we will suggest the best itinerary for that time of year.
