For about a century, Egypt was ruled by kings from the south. Around 730 BCE, the Kushite king Piye, whose capital was at Napata in what is now northern Sudan, marched north, defeated a patchwork of rival Egyptian rulers, and brought the whole Nile Valley under one crown. His successors governed Egypt as the 25th Dynasty, and today they are widely known as the “Black Pharaohs.”
Who was Kush?
Kush was a powerful Nubian kingdom centered on the Middle Nile, first at Napata and later at Meroë. Its people had lived alongside Egypt for thousands of years and shared many religious ideas, especially devotion to the god Amun. When the Kushite kings took control of Egypt, they presented themselves not as foreign invaders but as restorers of Egypt’s ancient traditions.
The kings of the 25th Dynasty
- Piye led the conquest and recorded his victory on a great stela set up at Gebel Barkal in Nubia.
- Shabaka consolidated Kushite rule over all of Egypt and is remembered for restoring temples and reviving old religious texts.
- Taharqa, the most famous of the dynasty, built on a grand scale at Karnak and elsewhere, and is even mentioned in the Hebrew Bible.
- Tantamani, the last Kushite king to rule Egypt, was pushed back south by the Assyrians around 656 BCE. The Kushite kingdom itself continued in Nubia for roughly another thousand years.
Where to see their legacy in Egypt
Karnak Temple, Luxor. In the great first court of Karnak stands a single towering column, all that remains of a monumental kiosk built under Taharqa. Ask your guide to point out the work of the Kushite kings as you walk through the temple.
The Nubian Museum, Aswan. This award-winning museum tells the story of Nubia from prehistory through the Kushite era to modern times, and gives essential context before you visit Nubian villages or Abu Simbel.
Museums in Cairo and Giza. Egypt’s national collections include objects from the Kushite period, including royal statuary. Collections and displays change, so your guide will help you find what is on view during your visit.
Why this story matters
The 25th Dynasty is a reminder that the history of the Nile Valley is a shared African history. Kings from what is now Sudan were crowned pharaohs, worshipped Egypt’s gods, and left their names on its greatest temple. For many of our guests, seeing that history in person is the emotional high point of the trip.
