The Grand Egyptian Museum, known as the GEM, is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. It stands about two kilometers from the Pyramids of Giza and opened to the public in November 2025. For travelers who want to experience Egypt as an African civilization, it is now an essential stop.
What to see
- The statue of Ramses II: an 11-meter colossus greets you in the great atrium.
- The Grand Staircase: lined with statues of kings and gods, it rises toward a window framing the Pyramids.
- The Tutankhamun galleries: more than 5,000 objects from the young king’s tomb, displayed together for the first time, including his golden mask, thrones and chariots.
- Khufu’s boat: the ancient cedar ship found beside the Great Pyramid.
As you walk through the galleries, look at how ancient Egyptians portrayed themselves and their neighbors to the south in Nubia. Our Egyptologist guides point out these details and tell the story of Kemet as part of African history.
Tickets and opening hours
Tickets are sold on the museum’s official website, visit-gem.com, with options with or without a guided tour. At the time of writing the galleries open from 9 am to 6 pm on most days, with late opening until 9 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Prices and hours change, so check the official site before your visit. If you book a tour with us, tickets and timing are handled for you.
How much time do you need?
Plan three to four hours for the main galleries. Many of our travelers combine the GEM with the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx on the same day, or visit the museum first to understand the history before seeing the monuments.
Tips for your visit
- Go early or on a late-opening evening to avoid the busiest hours.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the museum is huge.
- A guide makes a real difference. With thousands of objects, it helps to know where to look and what you are seeing.
