Alexandria Travel Guide: Egypt’s Mediterranean City

Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria was for centuries one of the great cities of the ancient world, home to the famous Lighthouse and Library. Today it is a breezy Mediterranean city with a relaxed pace, excellent seafood and fascinating history.

What to see

  • The Citadel of Qaitbay: a 15th-century fortress built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa: underground tombs that mix Egyptian, Greek and Roman art.
  • Pompey’s Pillar: a towering Roman column standing on the site of an ancient temple.
  • The Roman Amphitheatre: a small, well-preserved theater in the city center.
  • The Bibliotheca Alexandrina: a striking modern library inspired by the ancient Library of Alexandria, with museums inside.
  • Montaza Palace gardens and the Corniche: for sea views and a walk along the waterfront.

Food

Alexandria is the place for fresh seafood: choose your fish at the market-style restaurants and have it grilled or fried. Read our Egyptian food guide for more dishes to try.

How to visit

Alexandria is about three hours by road from Cairo, so it works well as a long day trip. You can also stay a night to enjoy the city at a slower pace. See our Alexandria tour from Cairo, or read our Cairo travel guide to plan the rest of your trip.

Arriving by cruise ship?

If your cruise docks in Alexandria, our Alexandria shore excursions take you around the city or to the Pyramids of Giza and back to the ship on time.
