Nile Cruise Guide: How to Choose the Right Cruise

A Nile cruise is the highlight of many trips to Egypt. You sleep on the river, wake up next to ancient temples and watch village life and palm-lined banks drift past from the sun deck. Here is how to choose the cruise that fits your trip.

Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?

Most cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo. Cruises starting in Luxor usually last four nights, while cruises starting in Aswan usually last three nights. The sightseeing is similar; choose the direction that fits your flights and the rest of your itinerary.

What you will see

  • Luxor: Karnak and Luxor temples, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut.
  • Edfu: the Temple of Horus, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt.
  • Kom Ombo: a double temple overlooking the river.
  • Aswan: Philae Temple, a felucca ride, the High Dam and the chance to visit a Nubian village. From Aswan you can add the temples of Abu Simbel.

Types of boats

  • Standard and deluxe cruise ships: the most common choice, with a pool, restaurant and comfortable cabins.
  • Luxury ships: larger suites, finer dining and more personal service. See our luxury Nile cruises.
  • Dahabiyas: traditional sailing boats with only a few cabins, for a quieter, more intimate experience.

Lake Nasser cruises

South of the High Dam, Lake Nasser cruises sail between Aswan and Abu Simbel, visiting remote Nubian temples. They are ideal if Nubian history is close to your heart.

When to go

October to April is the most comfortable season, with sunny days and cooler nights. Summer is very hot in Upper Egypt, but quieter and often better value.
