Egypt is one of the most exciting destinations you can share with your children. Pyramids, mummies, camel rides and sailing on the Nile turn history lessons into real adventures, and for African American families it is a powerful way to show children that this ancient civilization is part of Africa’s story.
What children love most
- Riding a camel near the Pyramids of Giza.
- Tutankhamun’s golden treasures at the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- Exploring tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
- A felucca ride and a visit to a colorful Nubian village in Aswan.
- Snorkeling in the Red Sea at the end of the trip.
Pacing your trip
Children enjoy Egypt most when the days are not too long. Start early, take a break in the hottest part of the day and keep afternoons for the pool or the cruise deck. A Nile cruise is ideal for families: you unpack once and the sights come to you.
Health and comfort
- Drink bottled or filtered water and pack basics for upset stomachs.
- Use strong sunscreen, hats and sunglasses for everyone.
- Carry snacks children like, as meal times can be late.
- Choose the cooler months, October to April, if you can.
Making it meaningful
Before you travel, read with your children about Kemet, Nubia and the Black pharaohs. Our Egyptologist guides adapt their stories for young travelers and connect what they see to African history. Start with why Egypt is an African story.
